Chapman pledges his future to Oxford United

Adam Chapman Adam Chapman

Adam Chapman insisted he always wanted to stay at Oxford United after lengthy contract negotiations ended yesterday with the midfielder signing a new two-year deal.

The 22-year-old had seemed to be heading for the exit after rejecting both the initial renewal from United in May and an improved offer last month.

But Chapman ended the speculation by penning a contract which will keep him at the Kassam Stadium until the end of the 2013/14 season.

He said: “The club, the chairman and the manager have been great ever since I’ve joined and I always wanted to stay here.”

Chapman’s aim now will be to re-establish himself into the U’s side after missing almost two seasons.

The former Sheffield United trainee returned to the squad last season after spending 14 months in a young offenders’ institution for causing death by dangerous driving, but injuries ruled him out until March.

Chapman featured prominently in the final weeks of the campaign.

U’s boss Chris Wilder was pleased to complete the negotiations with a player popular with fans and teammates alike.

He said: “My view’s not changed on him, he’s still got an important part to play.”
