Oxford United to bring in new face as Sean McGinty departs
OXFORD United are looking to recruit a new signing before tomorrow’s trip to Burton Albion after terminating Sean McGinty’s loan deal.
A free agent with several years of Football League experience has been training with the squad this week and could sign today.
Left back McGinty joined on a six-month agreement from Manchester United in August, but struggled to settle.
The 19-year-old was unable to earn a regular place in the side, making just two appearances, one as a late substitute, in cup competitions.
United boss Chris Wilder felt it was best to make a change and has been working on finding cover for Tony Capaldi as Liam Davis recovers from a long-term groin injury.
He said: “We’ve made the decision to send him back to Manchester United and we look to bring somebody in to cover until Liam comes back.
“We’re speaking to a couple of players, we don’t just want to take anybody for a month, we’ve made that stance as a club so we’re looking at what we can do that ticks a lot of boxes.
“It’s not as easy as picking the phone up, but we’ve been working extremely hard and we’re hopeful of getting somebody in.
“We’ve had somebody in this week and had a good look at them.
“They’ve got experience of the league, so really we’ve got to make sure we get the right deal.”
Davis is one of five senior first-team players who have missed the entire season so far, but there are signs the situation is beginning to improve.
Peter Leven was an unused substitute in last Saturday’s 4-2 home defeat to Exeter City and while not fully fit, the midfielder will be in the squad for tomorrow.
Harry Worley is due to begin full training next week and Davis is making progress.
But after missing the whole of the summer, Wilder is wary about rushing them back too quickly.
He said: “The ones who have missed pre-season are working overtime to catch up.
“It’s a difficult one with Liam – I can’t put a definite date when he’ll back, but these things can’t be rushed.”
