A breakaway move is on the cards again by the Hertfordshire clubs in the Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League (HCPL), which could have major ramifications for clubs in Oxfordshire.

A meeting on Monday of the leading 25 Saracens Hertfordshire League clubs is set to vote on a motion to form a Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League.

If the motion is carried – for which a 75 per cent majority is needed – it’s intended that the league will start in 2015, giving those clubs within the HCPL time to resign by June 30, 2014 in accordance with its constitution.

However, the HCPL committee have acted to counter this move by provisionally calling an extraordinary general meeting of their clubs on November 13 to vote on a motion to kick out the Hertfordshire-based clubs for next season.

For this motion to be carried a two-thirds majority would be needed.

However, with 13 clubs in the HCPL, the Hertfordshire League effectively hold the whip hand.

The Herts clubs due to play in HCPL Division 1 next season are Harpenden, North Mymms and Radlett.

Should the scenario arise that they were to leave, it would see the HCPL reduced to two divisions, and would involve a restructuring.

Aston Rowant may be directly affected as they finished third in Division 2 West last season, and could conceivably find themselves promoted to Division 1.

It could also have a knock-on effect for clubs in the Cherwell and Thames Valley Leagues.

The Hertfordshire League clubs threatened a breakaway earlier this year.

But they remained within the league after a proposal, from Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City, received backing at the annual meeting to split the season between 50-overs limited overs matches and the longer games.
