James Coles scored a sensational unbeaten 156 as Oxfordshire Under 12s cruised to victory over Buckinghamshire in a friendly at Abingdon Vale.

The 11-year-old’s superb knock is believed to be a under 12 county record.

Coles, who is playing a year above his age this season, hit 21 fours and four sixes in helping Oxon to 270-2.

Along the way he formed a formidable partnership of 193 with opener Freddie Smith (62).

After winning the toss, Oxon elected to bat first.

However, the innings did not go immediately to plan as captain Luke Charlesworth was clean bowled in the second over.

Coles arrived at the crease and, alongside Smith, rebuilt the innings before going about dismantling the Bucks bowling attack.

The visitors wrung the changes in order to get close to Coles’s wicket, but they were unable to stop the flow of boundaries.

Smith was eventually stumped for 62, which included eight fours, but Coles had already reached a century and showed no signs of slowing down.

He continued to punish anything left short as he scored all round the wicket.

In reply, Bucks subsided to 82 all out with Joe Elliott picking up three wickets for seven runs.

The visitors were in trouble at 17-2 after Charlesworth took a superb slip catch to dismiss Henry Pretorius.

Bucks never recovered and Coles’s superb innings earned Oxon a 188-run victory.
