Harrison Ward, who has just become the youngest Oxfordshire batsman to score a Unicorns Counties Championship century, met up with Ben Thompson, the player whose 17-year record he beat.

The duo got together on Saturday at Horspath, for whom Ward was playing against Henley – just four days after he made 109 not out against Herefordshire at Brockhampton at the age of 15 years and 269 days.

Thompson, who lives in Nottingham, was returning to the club for whom he was playing when he became Oxon’s youngest century-maker in 1998 with 111, also against Herefordshire at Aston Rowant, aged 17 years and 250 days.

Ward said: “The first person I saw congratulate me was Ben on Twitter.

“It was nice to meet him after he tweeted me. It is good to keep the record in Horspath.”

Thompson, now 34, added: “I am delighted that record has been broken by someone that plays for Horspath.

“It is one of the proudest things I have done, scoring a hundred for Oxfordshire.”
