FOOTBALL: Former Oxford City skipper Jackson dies at 75

FORMER Oxford City captain Bob Jackson has died at the age of 75.

Jackson, who lived at Brentwood, made more than 300 appearances for City after joining them in the 1959-60 season.

Known as “The Gentleman” due to his reputation of being one of the most sporting players to have appeared in City’s colours, he scored 32 goals, most of them from the penalty spot.

A right back, he began playing for the club while studying at St Edmund Hall.

He gained his soccer Blue in 1960, repeating the feat the following year, and after leaving the university he continued to appear for City, despite the long journey from his home in Essex where he was a schoolmaster in modern languages.

He retired from playing for City at the end of the 1967-68 season.

Jackson, who also had a final England trial, captained Oxfordshire, and was in the side which won the Southern Counties Amateur Championship.
