FOOTBALL: Barcelos nets to rescue Oxford City
9:30am Monday 25th February 2013 in Football
Oxford City snatched a point from the jaws of defeat at Histon in Blue Square Bet North on Saturday thanks to a late equaliser from Felipe Barcelos, writes MATTHEW BRUCE.
The hosts had dominated the game and deservedly led thanks to a well-worked goal finished by Nick Freeman.
But City struck back late on when Barcelos latched onto a ball from substitute Mark Bell to tap-in the equaliser.
City had the first chance of note in a poor first half when Histon goalkeeper Calum Kitscha made a sprawling save from a curling Jamie Cook free-kick.
After that it was all Histon and they should have taken the lead when Lewis Taaffe found himself one-on-one with City keeper Matt Ingram only to be denied by an outstretched leg from the young stopper.
And they again went close when Ben Coker struck a post from a free-kick, and City were able to clear their lines.
Histon started the second half much the brighter side and carved out an excellent chance when a nice passing move found Freeman in front of goal, but he struck his shot straight at Ingram.
However, he made no mistake just minutes later when a similar move found him in an identical position, this time tucking the ball away in the corner to give the hosts a deserved lead.
City had created little, but were forced onto the front foot as the game drew on.
Bell had a chance to level shortly after coming on when he was played through, but shot was straight at Kitscha.
And it was more good work from Bell which led to the City equaliser. He put on a burst of pace to beat his man before picking out Barcelos at the near post for a simple tap-in.
And City could have pinched a winner in the dying moments when Kitscha spilled a speculative shot from Darren Pond, before smothering at the feet of Paul Stonehouse.
Oxford City: Ingram, Gunn (Stanley 56), Stonehouse, Ballard (McNish 54), Learoyd, Willmott, Benjamin, Pond, Holgate, Cook (Bell 68), Barcelos. Subs not used: Mulvany, McEachran.
Referee: L Wood.
