FOOTBALL: Abingdon sunk by two-goal burst

TWO goals in five first-half minutes spelt defeat for Abingdon United at Bishops Cleeve in last night’s Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West basement battle.

With no fewer than six regular players unavailable, including four suspended, Abingdon were always going to be up against it.

Lee Davis gave the division’s basement club the lead in the 36th minute, and the visitors fell further behind five minutes later when Jake Lee doubled the advantage.

To their credit, United refused to throw in the towel after the break and pressed hard on occasions.

However, they lacked a cutting edge and rarely looked like like forcing their way back into the game.

* Oxford City won last night’s annual Town v Gown encounter with a 1-0 victory over Oxford University at Marsh Lane.
