Banbury United boss Edwin Stein says he has never once considered quitting the Calor League Premier Division club, despite their wretched run.

And he accused a small section of the home support of being ‘idiots’.

On Saturday, the Puritans crashed 7-0 to Hungerford Town to make it eight defeats on the spin. They last won on January 25 when they beat Bideford 1-0.

Tomorrow they travel to Truro City.

While unhappy about the bad run, Stein (pictured) refuses to throw in the towel.

“Not once have I thought about quitting,” he said. “I feel I am still capable of doing the job.

“Before the bad run, we played some fantastic football and people were enjoying it.

“I took it as a pat on the back, but I didn’t go overboard about it because I know what can happen in football.

“Then we had an implosion with the shocking weather. Games were cancelled and proceeds from matches meant we couldn’t pay the players and some left.”

He added: “The away support has been great, but some of the home fans have a different agenda.

“Some of these idiots need to take a step back and see what we have achieved this season.

“I would like them to think ‘when was the last time we were fifth in the league?’ “Against Bideford we played like you wouldn’t believe.

“The wheels have come off to a degree, but I don’t feel myself or Kim Dumbleton (chairman) have let anybody down. We have put our heart and soul into the club.

“My message to the supporters is to keep backing us and I am confident we will turn it round.

“But the buck stops with me.”
