Abingdon Town are quitting the Uhlsport Hellenic League after more than 50 years and are expected to play in the North Berks League next season.

The Hellenic’s general manager Brian King confirmed last night that the Culham Road club had officially requested demotion from the Hellenic League to the North Berks League.

Phil Annets, of the North Berks League, said: “We have had an official form from the club to join the North Berks League with both their first and reserve sides.”

Abingdon, one of 14 clubs looking to join, will be interviewed on May 12.

“They will be assessed on reasons for joining, finances, charter standard status and what level they want to play at,” added Annets.

Abingdon Town were one of the top clubs when the Hellenic League was formed in the early 1950s, winning the league championship four times, although the last of these was in 1987.

Tom Larman, the Abingdon Town chairman, declined to confirm they had applied for the North Berks League.

l Letcombe are looking to recruit managers for both their first and reserve teams for season 2014/15.

The club hope to reinstate their reserves in Hellenic League Division 2 West, with the first team continuing to play in Division 1 West.
