EVEN in his wildest dreams, John Mills couldn’t have imagined that he would have made such an impressive start to the season, writes MATTHEW BRUCE.

The Didcot Town striker is comfortably the top scorer in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West, and in all competitions he has found the net an incredible 26 times from 18 appearances this season.

Mills, who insists he has no intention of leaving the Railwaymen, has already surpassed his highly-respectable total of 19 goals from last season, causing him to revise his own expectations for the campaign.

He said: “I’ve set myself a target for the rest of the season and I’m going to focus on reaching that.

“It was 25 goals at the start, but I have already got that, so I’ve got a new number in my head.

“I don’t want to tell anyone what it is yet, but I do have a figure in mind.”

Mills has already rejected a potential move to an unnamed Vanarama Conference club after attracting considerable attention for his goalscoring exploits so far this season.

He said: “You always want to play at a higher level, so that is something I’d like to do.

“Obviously if an offer came in I would have to think about it, but I’m not looking to force a move.”

Mills, who has enjoyed previous spells with North Leigh, Abingdon United and Old Woodstock Town, has always been a goalscorer.

But he admits that he has never enjoyed such incredible form in front of goal before.

“It’s probably the best start to a season that I’ve ever had,” he said.

“The thing is, I don’t tend to do a lot other than score goals.

“Our wingers usually have a lot more of the ball than I do.

“I think the main thing has been the strike partnership I’ve had with Pablo Haysham this season.

“He tends to drop deeper and collect the ball and if you look at most of the goals I’ve scored this season, a lot of them have been set up by him.”

He added: “It helps to have Conners (joint manager Ian Concannon) here, because he played in the same position as me.

“Since he came in he’s told me to focus on attack rather than worrying about defensive duties, which I’ve had to do in the past.

“That makes it easier, because it takes a lot of the pressure off me and I can focus on scoring goals.

“I want to finish as top scorer in the league. Looking at where I am now I think I should be able to do that.”
