Banbury United boss Paul Davis says his players have to step up to the plate or risk being shown the door.

It follows their poor display in Tuesday’s 6-1 hammering at Coleshill Town in the Birmingham Senior Cup.

Davis was furious with their performance at the Midland League side which ended a five-match unbeaten run and wants a response when they host Northern Premier League outfit Ramsbottom United in the FA Trophy third-qualifying round tomorrow.

“We just weren’t very good,” he said.

“We were stuck in traffic and didn’t get there until 7.30 when the match started at 7.45, which didn’t help, but there is still no excuse.

“I don’t know why, but some of the players didn’t fancy it or were thinking about the Trophy game.

“It’s not as if I picked a reserve side. Some of the lads who have been knocking on my door to play had an opportunity to push for a place, but they did themselves no favours.

“That’s made my decision about the team for our next game a lot easier.”

He added: “Everyone has to step up their game or look for another club.”

Oxford City general manager Justin Merritt says his side must keep up their standards when they entertain Ryman League North side Lewes.

City made it back-to-back wins with a 2-0 success at Stalybridge in Vanarama Conference North and Merritt wants to keep up the good work.

“It’s a break from the league, but we want to keep this run going,” said Merritt.

“We’re not under-estimating Lewes. I saw them beat Heybridge on Tuesday (3-2 in a replay) and they’re on a run of five wins and two draws.

“We need to keep up the same intensity from our previous games.”

Merritt added: “It’s a competition we want to do well in, having gone out of the FA Cup to a lower league side this season (lost 2-1 at Shortwood).”

Declan Benjamin is back from a ban, while Kiko Insa is added to the squad.
