POLICE in Greenock said last night that two youths had been charged in

connection with the death of two men in last weekend's train crash.

Their arrest followed a week of intense police activity in the town,

with detectives interviewing more than 2000 people since the crash on

Saturday night.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said the youths, aged 16 and 17, were

expected to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

He said they had been detained under Section Two of the Criminal

Justice (Scotland) Act, which is employed by the police in the case of

individuals suspected of serious crime.

The actual charges to be brought against the youths will be decided by

the procurator-fiscal.

Police inquiries are continuing into the accident, but the indications

last night were that no other arrests are expected in the near future.

The train, from Wemyss Bay to Glasgow, was derailed while travelling

through Greenock at 11.45pm last Saturday.

Police investigations showed that a heavy object was on the line

shortly before the collision.
