A ROOFTOP protest by two prisoners at Shotts Prison, Lanarkshire,

which began on Tuesday afternoon ended peacefully yesterday. Strathclyde

police said that two 25-year-old men had been reported to the

procurator-fiscal in connection with two alleged incidents arising from

the protest.

The first prisoner gave himself up and came down from the roof of the

prison chapel at 7.30 yesterday morning, the other man following just

after nine o'clock. Negotiations with the men had been conducted by the

deputy governor, Mr Bill Middleton. The Scottish Office gave no

indication yesterday of any reason for the protest but said that any

grievance they had would be discussed with them.
