Banbury United are Oxfordshire Senior Cup champions for the sixth time following a tense 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over North Leigh after a thrilling 4-4 draw at the Kassam Stadium.

Jamie Cook and Kieran Sanders put North Leigh two goals to the good, but Banbury hit back with a Jacob Walcott penalty and goals from Jack Westbrook and Leam Howards.

A Callum McNish double restored North Leigh’s advantage, but captain Tom Ryan’s last-minute equaliser sent the game into extra-time and penalties – where the Puritans finally claimed victory.

North Leigh edged in front after seven minutes when Cook nodded home a Michael Hopkins cross.

They doubled the advantage in the 21st minute when captain Stuart Hole picked out Cook, who bamboozled goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell before squaring for Sanders to hammer home.

However, just four minutes later Banbury were awarded a penalty for a trip on Shepherd Murombedzi.

Walcott coolly dispatched the spot-kick, despite keeper Matt Bulman diving the right way.

Ten minutes before the break the sides were level thanks to a 25-yard volley from Westbrook, which arrowed into the top corner.

The second half was 15 minutes old when Banbury took the lead for the first time.

A superb reverse pass from sub Carl Tappin caught the North Leigh defence out and Howards rolled the ball inside the far post.

North Leigh equalised against the run of play, with an attempted clearance rebounding in off McNish.

McNish’s second goal nine minutes later was far more emphatic, as the former Southampton trainee twisted through two challenges before unleashing an unstoppable effort from outside the area.

North Leigh had one hand on the cup, but their dreams were crushed in the 90th minute when Ryan headed home a Hicham Abdellah cross to send the match into extra time.

Sanders nearly won it for the Millers in the final minute, but saw his long-range effort was tipped over by Bedwell.

And Bedwell proved to be the hero in the resulting penalty shoot-out, saving North Leigh’s fifth spot-kick from Morgan Williams with the score locked at 3-3.

Joel Meade then emphatically blasted home the decisive kick for his side, handing Banbury a glorious close to a nightmare season.
