RYAN Clarke has paid tribute to Oxford United's supporters after his six-year stay at the club ended yesterday by mutual consent.

The 33-year-old still had 12 months left on his contract, but was released to sign a two-year deal at Northampton Town.

Clarke was United's longest-serving player in the existing squad, with his 267 games including the 2010 Conference play-off final at Wembley.

Even before the move was announced he was stunned to receive messages of thanks from U's supporters and the goalkeeper was keen to return the favour.

He said: "They treated me great since my first game, I take my hat off to them on that.

"They have supported me through the good times and fortunately there haven’t been too many bad times while I was there.

"I have been taken aback quite a lot by all the messages I have received and how well thought of I am by the fans.

"It’s only just sinking in.

"I’m very humbled by all the messages I have received and how well I’m thought of – but I think the same of them in return."

The Oxford Mail revealed in May he had been told by U's boss Michael Appleton there were no guarantees who would start next season as the club's No 1.

Sam Slocombe joined last month to increase the competition and Clarke felt Northampton offered the chance to feature regularly.

He said: "I knew what my position was and it wasn’t a case that I had to leave, but I think it is a big year for me coming up and you have to give yourself the best possible chance to play.

"There’s nothing personal between me and the manager, or the club.

"It’s football and I believe with the squad Northampton have got they will be up there challenging, as Oxford will.

"I really do wish them all the best."
