OXFORD United’s man for the big occasion is determined to repeat his Emirates FA Cup heroics when Blackburn Rovers visit the Kassam Stadium this afternoon.

Kemar Roofe hit the headlines three weeks ago when his double guided United to a memorable 3-2 victory over Premier League club Swansea City in the third round.

And with United eyeing progression to the last 16 for the first time in 22 years, they may just have the man to lead them there in front of another sell-out crowd.

The 23-year-old forward, who has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season, admits there is something about huge games that inspires him.

“There is extra motivation,” he said.

“The atmosphere is bigger as well and everybody is just up for it a bit more.

“It is a bigger reason to prove a point as well against better opposition.”

It has been quite a turnaround for Roofe who, before joining the U’s on loan last February, had not made a single first team appearance for then parent club West Bromwich Albion.

Six goals in seven games at the end of last season prompted United to sign the forward on a three-year deal in the summer and from there neither the club or player has looked back.

Roofe added: “That is the beauty of football.

“It can all change in six months and you never know what could happen.

“You just focus on yourself, put in the hard work and hopefully success comes.”

With United third in Sky Bet League Two, a game away from the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final and installed by some bookies as favourites to beat Blackburn today, the players are riding high with confidence.

For Roofe, all the plaudits are down to team, not individual efforts.

But he believes United must stay grounded and focused on their ultimate aim – promotion to Sky Bet League One – if they are to achieve.

“I think that is the key to this squad and the success we’re getting,” he said. “Everyone is singing off the same hymn sheet and determined not to get carried away.

“Probably no-one expected us to be so successful in the cups and hopefully we go as far as we can, but the main objective is promotion.

“Everyone is enjoying it and they just want more of it each week and that is probably extra motivation to be successful.”

“Hopefully we can enjoy it at the end of the season.”
