OXFORD United’s supporters deserve the promotion as much as the players according to Kemar Roofe, who missed the initial celebrations in the changing room after being mobbed on the pitch.

The forward’s 18 goals in Sky Bet League Two have played a key role in firing the U’s to automatic promotion.

It was sealed by a 3-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers and on the final whistle supporters flooded the pitch at the Kassam Stadium.

Roofe, who had come off as a late substitute, was engulfed by supporters, but loved every minute of what was his highlight of the season.

“I missed the celebration in the changing room, but it was worth it,” he said.

“Obviously the fans were excited and they deserve it as much as us.

“Getting promoted, you can’t beat that. It’s rounded it all off completely.

“As an individual and a team this is amazing, promotion was the main goal.”

Roofe was a doubt for the clash with the Chairboys due to an ankle problem which has been troubling him for several weeks.

The former West Bromwich Albion trainee was able to prove his fitness to earn a place in the starting line-up, although he looked some way below his sharpest form.

He was still able to play an important role, drawing the foul from Aaron Pierre to earn a 72nd penalty, which Chris Maguire converted to make it 2-0.

Roofe said: “The ankle was hurting but you don’t think about it when you’re playing.

“I don’t care how it is now. I just need rest and we’ll just celebrate.

“We’ve worked hard, we’ve probably played the most games this season.

“We’ll enjoy it now.”

It came after Roofe gestured furiously at Danny Hylton for not passing to him in the first half.

The forward felt it showed how much everyone at United wanted to get over the line.

He said: “That’s what competitors are like, everyone wants to win and you demand the maximum from each other.

“If you don’t see that there’s no heart in it.”

He added: “It’s good because you can talk as much as you want, but actions speak louder than words.

“We’ve done it this season.”
