JEFFERSON Louis struck a dramatic 90th-minute winner to give Oxford City a 1-0 victory at home to Whitehawk, writes MATTHEW BRUCE.

The Vanarama National League South match had looked destined to finish goalless as both sides cancelled each other out, but Louis had other ideas.

While City had to be patient for their winning goal, it could have been different as they almost took the lead inside two minutes, Mike Fondop glancing a Scott Davies free-kick narrowly wide.

That would be Fondop’s only significant contribution as he soon hobbled off after with a hamstring injury.

His replacement, Kaiman Anderson made an immediate impact, seeing his powerful shot blocked.

At the other end, Whitehawk went close twice in quick succession, Iby Akanbi firing an effort just wide and Mike West seeing his powerful long-range strike palmed away by keeper Craig Hill.

But it was City who finished the first half in the ascendancy and were unlucky not to find themselves in front as Louis smashed an effort against the post from a narrow angle.

They were almost made to pay for their failure to take those chances when Whitehawk’s Hogan Ephraim played Frankie Sutherland clean through 20 minutes into the second half.

But he was denied by a fabulous one-handed save from Hill.

Lucas Covolan was also kept busy in the Whitehawk goal, being forced to save a thunderous 30-yard strike from Godfrey Poku and then having to smother at the feet of Anderson.

He was finally beaten in the last minute of the match when Louis brilliantly controlled Davies’s lofted ball before gently stroking home the winner beyond the reach of the stranded visiting keeper.
