FOOTBALL: Cook's deflected strike wins it for City
9:50am Monday 6th August 2012 in Football
A deflected free-kick by former Oxford United striker Jamie Cook gave Oxford City a 1-0 victory in their warm-up match away to Rugby Town on Saturday. In a game of few chances, City, who will be starting their Blue Square North campaign in two weeks, had the better of the exchanges against their opponents from Midlands Division 1 of the Evo-Stik Southern League.
The only goal came five minutes from time after City substitute Steve Basham had been fouled on the edge of the penalty area.
Cook’s free-kick took a deflection off the defensive wall and found the net just inside an upright.
North Leigh , who play in the Southern League Division 1 South & West, pulled off a notable 3-1 win away to Gosport Borough The Millers looked sharp took the lead after 26 minutes through Mitch Bryant, who netted from a narrow angle after good play from James Organ and John Mills. Before half-time, Gosport, who were promoted to the Premier Division last season, equalised through Dan Woodward whose hard low shot beat keeper Sam Warrell.
Stuart Hole restored North Leigh’s lead in the 51st minute, with a textbook free-kick.
Two minutes later, Mills scored the best goal of the game following good work by Wayne Turk and Toby Clarkgressed.
