FOOTBALL: Merritt quits Witney

Witney Town have been rocked by the resignation of boss Justin Merritt after only three months in charge of the Uhlsport Hellenic League club.

Merritt took over in early June, but increased work commitments meant he could no longer devote enough time to running the Premier Division outfit.

Assistants Eddie Denton and Justin Lee have been placed in temporary charge ahead of Saturday’s FA Carlsberg Vase second qualifying round trip to Holmer Green.

Denton says he and Lee would be happy to take the job as joint managers on a permanent basis, subject to successful talks taking place with club chairman Tom Amer and director of football Andy Lyne.

Lyne said: “Obviously, on a personal level, I am sorry to see Justin go as we have worked successfully together on and off for many years.

“He and his vastly experienced management team have introduced a high level of professionalism into Witney and this has taken us to another level.”
