FOOTBALL: Claydon is the hero

Richie Claydon hit a hat-trick as Wantage Town won 6-1 at Cove after extra time in the FA Carlsberg Vase second qualifying round.

Claydon’s penalty in the second half was cancelled out by a Pat Kirby strike as normal time finished 1-1.

But Wantage ran amok in extra time with Claydon scoring twice more to complete his hat-trick together with goals from Gavin Jones, John McMahon and Tom Rowe.

Ben Moses was a hat-trick hero as Witney Town coasted to a 6-0 win at Holmer Green.

Conor McDonagh bagged a brace and James Dobson also netted. Dan Mason’s double helped Kidlington to a 3-2 home win over Bracknell Town.

Ryan Curtin was also on target, with Bracknell replying through a James Rogers penalty and Jones.

Alex Stewart bagged a brace as Thame United squeezed past Buckingham Athletic 3-2 at the ASM Stadium.

Connor Hayes also netted for the hosts.

Hook Norton earned a replay with a 3-3 draw after extra time at Fairford Town.

Strikes by Ben Tew and Jason Tillcock in normal time for Hook Norton were cancelled out by Nathan Gambling and Callum Parsons.

Tillcock put Hook Norton ahead again in extra time only for Gambling to equalise.

Chinnor’s debut in the competition proved short-lived with a 1-0 home defeat by Ascot United.

John Bennett’s 83rd-minute strike divided the teams, but Chinnor had the consolation of a bumper 271 attendance.

Shrivenham crashed out with a 4-0 home defeat by Cheltenham Saracens.

Ben Griffiths (2), Ryan Paddock and Ethan Moore did the damage.
