FOOTBALL: Vincente secures rare home victory
10:10am Monday 23rd April 2012 in Evo-Stick Southern One South & West Table & Results
Didcot Town ended their Evo-Stik Southern League home campaign with a 1-0 victory against basement side Stourport Swifts.
It was only the Railwaymen’s sixth win in 19 Division 1 South & West games at the Loop Meadow – a statistic that will have to be addressed if they are to make an attempt at gaining promotion next season.
Didcot manager Dave Mudge once again chose to field a number of youngsters with teenagers Ryan Tappin and Jack Bernasconi making starts and Lewis Noble and Harry Halls coming on after the break.
In a low-key first half, Didcot’s best chance fell to Tom Mudge, but he headed over.
The second half was a better spectacle and the hosts edged ahead on 54 minutes.
Denilson Vincente showed great composure to slot home past Haydn Whitcombe from six yards.
Vincente should have doubled the lead ten minutes later.
After Whitcombe had denied Anaclet Odhiambo the ball fell to Vincente, but he fired his effort against the bar.
Rory Curtis almost made Didcot pay for that miss when he curled a left-foot shot narrowly wide .
Didcot Town: Beames, Heapy, Owens, Mudge (Halls 57), Henderson, Tappin, Bernasconi (Noble 84), Elkins, Vincente, Odhiambo (Hodgkins 55), Davis. Subs not used: Feaver, Hodgkins.
Attendance: 134.
