BANBURY United, depleted by a mass walk-out before the game, secured a notable 1-1 draw in their FA Cup 1st qualifying round tie at Hungerford on Saturday.

The exodus from the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Divison club, followed the sudden departure of manager Ady Fuller.

Banbury’s new management team of Edwin Stein and Paul West had to bring in five debutants for the tie and will be encouraged by the display which earns a replay at Spen-cer Stadium tomorrow night.

The newcomers to start were keeper Matthew Gill, defenders Nathan McLeod and Conor Colins and midfielder Dan Lawlor Another midfielder, Eric Kusi, came on as a substitute.

Banbury started strongly and went close when a Lawlor corner found Jack Ashton, whose powerful header was diverted over the bar after hitting teammate Ricky Johnson just two yards out.

The visitors best chance of the first half fell to Johnson whose header was brilliantly turned away by Hungerford keeper Paul Strudley.

Ten minutes into the second-half, Banbury took the lead when Johnson side-stepped a defender before slamming the ball home, despite a brave attempt by Strudley to keep it out.

Hungerford got stronger as the young visitors tired, and equalised 11 minutes from time when Banbury keeper Matt Gill parried a fierce shot from substitute Luke Hopper into the path of fellow sub Bradley Gray, who tapped the rebound home.

Banbury nearly snatched victory when Lorraine jinked through the defence, but Strudley whipped the ball off the striker’s boot.

Banbury Utd: Gill, Cray, Ashton, Collins, McLeod, Polk, Lorraine (Kusi 90) Lawlor, Johnson, Talabi, Lunzitisa. Sub. not used Woodley.
