NORTH Leigh enhanced their play-off-hopes and doused their opponents’ chances with a 2-0 victory over Winchester City on Saturday.

A goal in each half won this closely-fought Evo-Stik Southern Division 1 South & West game for the Millers on a difficult Eynsham Park surface.

After less than a minute’s play, George Seacole’s near-post header for the Millers went just wide.

Then the visitors’ top-scorer Craig Feeney’s chipped shot went over the advancing Millers’ keeper Manny Agboola but landed on the roof of the net.

North Leigh took the lead after 27 minutes, following persistent play by Roger James on the right.

His hard, low cross was missed by Winchester keeper Lewis Noice, but hit right back Olly Searle, who saw the ball rebound off his body and trickle over the line for an own goal.

Only a last-ditch tackle by Millers centre back Matt Sysum denied Feeney before the break, while at the other end Michael Hopkins flashed a shot past Noice’s left-hand post.

The Millers, playing up the slope in the second half, made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute.

Hopkins clipped a cross over the heads of Winchester’s central defenders to the far post where Seacole stooped low to head past Noice.

This effectively killed off the game as the Millers were not threatened by Winchester’s wayward shooting.
