OXFORD United's Boxing Day game against Woking will witness the biggest attendance of home fans for more than 20 years.

There will be over 10,500 supporters cheering the U's on in a record Conference gate of around 11,000.

Boxing Day traditionally draws big gates, but this particular game has captured the imagination of the Oxfordshire people, who seem to want to celebrate the new dawn for the club under owner Nick Merry and manager Jim Smith.

United secretary Mick Brown said: "There will have been bigger attendances at Oxford United games, but this will be the biggest home support since the mid-80s when the capacity at the Manor Ground was 14,400.

"The home support will be in excess of 10,500 and we've not seen that for more than 20 years.

"It is a remarkable feat."

There were only 200 tickets remaining yesterday and the ticket office is closed today, tomorrow and on Christmas Day.

However, if there still are any tickets remaining, they can be bought online from Oxford United by going on their website.

The gate will not be the biggest at the Kassam Stadium because there has to be an area of segregation between rival fans in the North Stand, which reduces the capacity.

There were 12,177 for the 2002 Worthington Cup tie against Aston Villa, for instance, when the whole of the North Stand was given to Villa.

United will be without Chris Willmott and Marvin Robinson through injury, and probably Matt Day, and Smith says the team he puts out may see a slight change to the one that was due to face Lewes before the FA Trophy replay was fogged off.

"The team might not be the one I was going to play on Wednesday night. That will depend on how they look when I see them in training."

For a change, United's players will not be training on Christmas Day.

The U's boss feels that with quite a them travelling in from a distance, it would be beneficial not to train on Christmas Day.

Table-topping Oxford are looking for their first win in four games, but the massive crowd, and atmosphere they will create, should act like an extra man for them.

Smith said: "Boxing Day's a big day in the football calendar and our fans have responded magnificently. But the most important thing is to get the three points.

"We've had a total imbalance in away games, but now we can pull that back."

United will be hoping to put on a show as many in the crowd will not be regular Oxford United supporters.

"I think they'll enjoy the day and it's important we entertain them by our performance and by getting the three points," Smith said.

Woking welcome back their England non-League goalkeeper Shwan Jawal, who is Iraqi-born but was brought up in Sussex.
