OXFORD United slipped to a seventh-straight defeat in all competitions as a late penalty proved the difference against Tottenham Hotspur.

Coral Haines’s 89th-minute spot-kick earned the visitors a 2-1 victory in FA Women’s Super League 2 last night.

Only one point separated the sides ahead of the fixture at Court Place Farm and there was little between them.

Katie O'Leary gave Tottenham the breakthrough on the half-hour mark, firing home on the rebound after Demi Lambourne had denied Bianca Baptiste.

United should have hit back straight away, but Hannah Short fired wide.

Goalkeeper Lambourne kept the hosts in the game on 67 minutes, making a brilliant point-blank save to keep out Ryah Vyse’s header.

The U’s then deservedly equalised when Short turned in Ella Franklin-Fraiture’s low cross with 19 minutes to go.

But just when the match looked certain to end in a draw, Imogen Lancaster fouled Spurs’ Ashleigh Neville in the area and Haines sent Lambourne the wrong way.

United will look to bounce back immediately when they take on Aston Villa at Tamworth on Sunday.
