The 3-1 scoreline does not do justice to the complete control that Cambridge had in their British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division clash against Banbury United at the City Ground on Saturday.

The Lilywhites should have taken the lead when Scott Neilson’s effort was turned over by Joe Murrell.

Kameron Abassi fired inches over at the other end, before Cambridge took the lead in the 22nd minute when Steve Gentle put the ball through to Ashley Fuller who drove home from a narrow angle.

Murrell came to Banbury’s rescue again, whipping away Gentle’s header.

Banbury equalised on the half-hour mark when Nicky Gordon flicked Nathan Haisley’s drive into the corner of the net following a Scott Bridges’s corner.

Luke Bennett then cleared off the line from Danny Bloomfield, before Neil Midgley hit the bar, and Murrell produced another great save.

Matt Haniver rattled the Banbury bar early in the second half, before Cambridge’s second goal arrived in the 58th minute.

They took a free-kick quickly and Bloomfield slipped the ball past Murrell from six yards.

Banbury’s fate was sealed in the 89th minute, when Lee Roache seized on a deflected shot from Bloomfield to net from close in. Banbury Utd: Murrell, Abbassi, Peppiatt (Stringfellow 63), Essex, Bennett, Redknap, Haisley, Stanbridge (Travers 46), Forinton, Gordon, Bridges. Subs not used: Buckwell, Sambrook.

Attendance: 290.
