Eddie Pepperell had an eventful opening round at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth yesterday.

The Frilford Heath golfer, from Abingdon, had five birdies and five bogeys on his card to shoot a level par 72.

It left him in a share of 38th position, one shot behind world No 1 Rory McIlroy and seven behind overnight leader Francesco Molinari.

Pepperell, 24, who was only reunited with his clubs on Wednesday after a mix-up following the Spanish Open last weekend, made a slow start and dropped a shot at the first hole.

Back-to-back birdies at the fourth and fifth got him under par, but he reached the turn one-over after successive bogeys on the eighth and ninth.

The undulating round continued, as he birdied the par threes on the tenth and 14th, only to give the gains back on 15 and 16.

A birdie four at the 17th got Pepperell back to level par ahead of today’s second round, which he will begin at 1.15pm.
