Eddie Pepperell hit the heights and plumbed the depths in his first round of 78 in the first round of the US PGA Championship  at Whistling Straits.

Starting at the tenth hole, the Frilford Heath golfer had a stunning eagle three at the par-fve 16th hole - his seventh- to go under par for the first time.

However, bogeys at the next two holes meant the 24-year-old went out in one over par.

The real disaster for the Abingdon professional, who played in the more difficuly windy conditions in the afternoon, came on the par-five fifth hole - his 14th hole - where he had a triple-bogey eight.

Another bogey saw him finish the round in tied 132nd place on six-over-par 78 and facing a big struggle to avoid the halfway cut in his third major championship.

American Dustin Johnson leads the way on 66, the world's top two players Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth both carding 71s.
