EDDIE Pepperell’s first thoughts after winning the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters were about his family, writes MICHAEL KNOX.

The Frilford Heath member clinched his maiden European Tour title on Sunday, when he won by a shot from fellow Englishman Oliver Fisher, who missed a ten-foot putt on the last to tie.

“When Oli missed I thought ‘my parents are going to be going mental,’” said the 27-year-old.

Father Ron was playing in a golf tournament in Hampshire along with his other son Joe, the professional at Oxford GC.

Joe tweeted scenes of loud celebrations as his brother secured a place back in the top 100 of the world rankings – 92nd to be precise. He had previously reached 80th in 2015.

Alistair Booth, the Frilford Heath chairman, said: “I’m ecstatic, I could hardly bear to watch as it was was so tense.

“Eddie’s a smashing person, who thoroughly deserves this success.”

“He’s been a great supporter of junior golf at the club through the Eddie Pepperell Academy which he finances.”

Martin Morbey, secretary of the Berks, Bucks & Oxon PGA, was not surprised by Pepperell’s success.

Morbey, who coached the future star when he was the professional at Drayton Park, Abingdon, said: “Eddie has the belief, an insatiable desire to get better, a good mentality and brilliant work ethic – all the attributes you need to make it in sport.

“I won’t be surprised if his career takes a step up from here and he wins again.”

There was delight around the golfing world at Pepperell’s success with friends and fellow pros taking to their twitter accounts to congratulate him.

His former caddie Jamie Herbert tweeted: “Great to see the old boss @PepperellEddie with Mick Doran tonight, so pleased for the boy having known him since he was 7 years old. Come a long way and deserves his win today. Congrats Edwardo many more to follow.”

Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn posted: “Enjoy your success, I have a feeling this won’t be the last...”

Former world No 1 Luke Donald tweeted: “Nothing feels like your first win on tour. Congratulations @PepperellEddie.”

Oli Fisher: Huge congrats to @PepperellEddie played solid all day and showed some real class out there. I gave it my best but unfortunately a little short. Looking forward to next year @CBQatarMasters @DohaGolfClub
