Can anyone explain why sledging is accepted even in top level cricket when the laws of cricket precludes such behaviour? Most players who play local league cricket are used to putting up with childish comments usually laced with swear words without complaint or reaction even though by my reading of cricket's laws it should not happen.

Sledging is part of the fun, provided it has a witty undertone to it. We all stand in the field for too long to not get into conversation with the batsmen. Sadly I have seen a degrading in the standard of sledging in the Cherwell recently as fielders and bowlers have just gotten lazy and resort to the more sinister abusive form of the art. I'm not averse to taking a wander down the pitch to tell a batsman exactly what I think they are doing wrong but I'll do it with a smile on my face. I expect to get the same when I have a bat in my hand. It is a shame that some folk just haven't got an intelligence level that allows them to converse without profanity or aggression.

@phil j
I amsure I could take your comments in the spirit that they are intended but this is from the preamble to the laws of cricket

'5. It is against the Spirit of the Game:

* To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire
* To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice, for instance:
(a) to appeal knowing that the batsman is not out

(c) to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one's own side.'

Which surely brings a lot of what goes on into question.

I find myself agreeing with you Phil, what's worse is the most gobby are often the least talented. I'll accept a bit of verbal from a player I respect, but I'm sure some teams just select players who can't bat or bowl, but just to stand there and inquire about your parentage etc.

Morning Nagging, you are absolutely right, sadly the preamble is more of a wish list rather than a directive, although you can be charged with failing to uphold the spirit of the game if you really go too far. The spirit is one of those things that means something different to everyone. For some it is win at all costs, for others it is to just enjoy yourself irrespective of the circumstances. Most guys I have come up against follow it reasonably well, but you will always get those that can't exercise the necessary self control and take things too seriously. It would be a shame if anyone ever turned round and tried to put a stop to the banter. But there is such a fine line between things being light hearted and turning nasty it would seem that someone may try and do just that

Does this mean the Baggies are relegated ?

I don't think so. If they apply those penalties this season it will have no impact on either club. Wolverton would drop from 3rd to 4th and Baggies would drop from 8th to 9th. As we are probably only going to have one relegated in the Cherwell because of nothing coming down from the HC it would mean Baggies would still stay n Div 3. Those penalties should be applied next season.

What no one has commented on is whether the punishment fits the crime. Personally we should applaud the league for their findings as this type of behaviour is becoming all to common and needs addressing. This will surely act as a strong warning for those who still wish to participate in this activity.

I think that the punishments are alright. The mass suspension of the majority of them will ensure best behaviour going forward, but are harsh enough to make a point.

Surely 'when' the points deductions apply is extremely important. Why would this not be made clear at the time of the verdict ... or has the OM just missed this? (Ed?)

I understand that the points deduction will apply next season.

Hmm! need to work on the typesetting. Incidentally "nagginglength, Abingdon" you could only be the relentlessly accurate Roger Newman and it's hard to imagine Roger blogging somehow. As for the other points above about sledging: agree that most players have lost the art of the sharp comment that makes the batsman think. In any event a clever fielding change beats a hundred dumb sledges anyway. Many players neither truly understand the game or respect it now which is why we have arguments and even fights. Assuming (regrettably) there may be future serious incidents I will buy the first captain to send his own player off, a jug of his favourite beer.

I think it's Robin Newman, the guy who bowls around 15mph, good job him and my mate Trev don't play for the same team, batsmen would end up hanging themselves....

My god, they must be quaking in their boots. If you are going to give punishments to cheating sportsmen, make them punishments not a tickle on the googlies.

You mean you couldn't have found space for an extra sentence. Must have been a busy news day in Oxford.

We got the story at 11pm (the hearing was that night) with a deadline fast approaching, so had to create what space we could.
