As for the other points above about sledging: agree that most players have lost the art of the sharp comment that makes the batsman think. In any event a clever fielding change beats a hundred dumb sledges anyway. Many players neither truly understand the game or respect it now which is why we have arguments and even fights. Assuming (regrettably) there may be future serious incidents I will buy the first captain to send his own player off, a jug of his favourite beer."

CRICKET: Cherwell hand out hefty penalties

The Oxford Times Cherwell League tonight handed out hefty penalties to Kingston Bagpuize and Wolverton Town at a disciplinary hearing into a clash between Bagpuize’s Rob Keates and Wolverton’s Hakim Khan.

Keates was banned for eight weeks, with four suspended, while his captain Dave Pearce received a suspended six-week ban.

Bagpuize were docked 25 points and handed a suspended £100 fine.

Khan was banned for three years, two of which were suspended, and his captain Andy Gosling was banned for six weeks, four of which were suspended.

Wolverton were docked 50 points and handed a £200 suspended fine.
