City of Oxford’s young rowers enjoyed a spectacular weekend of success with a gold medal and two silvers in the national competition at Nottingham.

Such was the high standard of performance from their 15 competing juniors, the club finished fourth out of 49 in the Victor Ludorum.

Pride of place went to Vera Spanke and Lillian Caccia, who took gold to become British champions in the girls J16 double scull in a course-record time City also won two silvers through Ava Dale – in the girls J14 single scull – and Robby Crowther and Tom Placidi, in the boys J14 double scull. In all, seven City crews reached finals, the four remaining ones producing two fifth and two sixth-placed finishes. Wallingford also enjoyed some success, taking a bronze medal. In an increasingly competitive field of J15 coxed quads, the Wallingford A crew of Arthur Arnould, Tim Waller, David Willcox, Henry Edwards and cox Alice Middleton came a superb third, less than a second behind the silver medallists.

In addition, Wallingford’s B crew of George Skilling, Will Mangion, Wrenton Toth, Joe Morris and cox Jessica Polkey came second in the B final. The club’s junior women’s double scull of Alice Walker and Freya Dale just missed out on bronze, coming fourth in the A final.

Another Wallingford, member, Lucy Walker, convincingly won the B final of the women’s junior J15 single sculls.

Other crews to reach the B finals were Jessica Polkey and Morgan Sims in the J14 pairs and Dan Wilkinson in the J16 singles.
