Andy Whing admitted a last-gasp 2-1 defeat at Carlisle United meant a good week for Oxford United had ended on a sour note, writes DAVID PRITCHARD.

The U’s travelled north on the back of victories against Tranmere Rovers and Northampton Town in the space of four days.

But their hopes of claiming three successive wins for the first time since August 2013 were sunk as a lead was squandered in the final 20 minutes.

United midfielder Whing said: “We had two really good wins and performances and we wanted to make it a great week.

Latest United news:

“It looked like it at half-time, but it’s ended on a sour note and we’ve just got to look forward to the next game now.

“We’re better than we were (at Carlisle) and that’s the most frustrating thing about it.”

The game was affected by a strong wind, which blew down the pitch all afternoon.

While acknowledging United, who managed tricky conditions well in Tuesday’s 3-1 win at Northampton, should have done better, Whing thought it suited Carlisle’s approach.

He said: “It was very difficult.

“We were against it in the first half and I think it might’ve played into their hands because it was holding up a bit in the second half.

“They pumped a lot of balls into our box, so probably the conditions helped them more than us.

“But we are disappointed with the way we kept giving the ball away and unfortunately it invited pressure, which told in the result.”
