MICHAEL Collins looks set to continue at Oxford United next season after triggering an extension to his contract.

The midfielder signed a one-year deal last summer, but the deal included a clause which provided an extra 12 months if he reached a set number of appearances.

Collins has featured in 41 games this season – a figure only surpassed in the U’s squad by Jake Wright, Johnny Mullins and Danny Hylton.

It is enough to generate an extra season, although the 28-year-old is not taking anything for granted.

He said: “I have activated a year through appearances, so at the moment the situation is that will be the case.

“I’m happy here, I enjoy working under the gaffer.

“It’s a club that’s got the right foundations in place, it’s a got a chairman who is passionate about the club and a manager who is young and is prepared to put the work in.

“In my opinion he’s got a big future ahead of him in management."

He added: “You can’t rest on your laurels.

“This is one of those clubs I’m sure in the summer will bring in some top signings, probably some of the better ones you’ll see in League Two.

“For anybody involved now they are playing for their futures and making sure they are a part of it going forward for next season.”
