AN excellent all-round performance saw Oxford United sweep Yeovil Town aside and move into Sky Bet League Two's top five.

Danny Hylton and Callum O'Dowda each finished with a goal and an assist, but the home side's dominance was so great they might easily have scored five or six.

Yeovil looked poor and never really caused United's defence any problems as they claimed a first clean sheet of the league campaign.

Kemar Roofe hit the crossbar late on, but it did not take the edge off an entertaining game for the home fans, decked out in shirts from seasons gone by as part of retro day.

As expected, U's boss Michael Appleton undid the six changes he made for the midweek Capital One Cup defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

The one alteration from the squad which faced Mansfield Town a week earlier was on the bench, where James Roberts was included for the first time at the expense of the injured Sam Long.

The break for some of the key players appeared to have done United good, as they came roaring out of the traps.

Within six minutes Yeovil goalkeeper Artur Krysiak saved from Hylton and George Baldock.

The latter's effort was only parried and fell to Kemar Roofe, whose shot was blocked on the line by Stephen Arthurworrey.

Wingers O'Dowda and Alex MacDonald also had early joy against their full backs and both were involved in an excellent opening goal in the 14th minute.

A patient passing move, which began with goalkeeper Sam Slocombe, led to a through ball being cut out on the edge of the Yeovil penalty area.

But the visitors were pressed into an error and MacDonald pounced on the ball, driving into the box.

He played in O'Dowda, who wrong-footed the defence by turning down a shot and chipping the ball for an unmarked Hylton to steer a header past two men on the line.

It was the least United's fast start deserved and meant they had scored the opening goal in a league game for the first time this season.

Yeovil looked limited and their only moment of real danger came via a mis-placed pass from Slocombe.

It led to a corner which flashed across the face of goal, but to United's relief no-one could get a touch.

The only disappointment for United at half-time was they were only one goal ahead.

Sercombe fired over from range, while Hylton was only denied a second goal on 31 minutes when his shot struck a defender and flew wide.

Yeovil boss Paul Sturrock's concern was shown by a tactical substitution 11 minutes before the break, bringing David Norris on for Alex Lacey.

The visitors saw more of the ball after the restart, but looked incapable of any attacking invention beyond ineffective chipped balls towards lone striker Ryan Bird.

Before long United regained their control of the game and came close to a second goal on 55 minutes.

The excellent Rose intercepted a pass and fed O'Dowda, who in turn drove forward to pick out Roofe.

The forward, who had scored in his previous four games, spun his marker but could only shoot straight at Krysiak.

The Polish goalkeeper was beaten midway through the half when Sercombe ran on to a clever pass from MacDonald, but his clipped finish drifted wide.

Although Yeovil were comfortably second best, while it was only 1-0 they were in the game and Sturrock threw on strikers Mark Beck and Shaun Jeffers in the hope of pinching an equaliser.

A goal did arrive 15 minutes from time, but at the other end.

Roofe did well to hold off two challenges and allow Hylton to scurry forward.

His shot was scuffed, but the ball fell perfectly for O'Dowda to sweep home.

Hylton quickly teed up Roofe with a chance he shot at Krysiak.

United's No 4 came mighty close to a spectacular goal late on with a 25-yard shot which tore through the air and smacked the crossbar.

MacDonald and substitute Patrick Hoban also came close to adding gloss to the scoreline late on, but United had to make do with a 2-0 win.
