CHRIS Maguire was pleased to see Oxford United show the quality he had heard about as the striker helped them to a win on debut.
The 26-year-old had just one training session with his new teammates before Saturday’s 1-0 vicrtory at Hartlepool, having moved from Rotherham United on loan deadline day last Thursday.
Although Hartlepool’s strong display and blustery conditions saw United never reach top gear, Maguire was encouraged by the glimpses of their best form.
The Scot said: “The gaffer said the quality was there and I thought at times we showed that.
“We tried to pass it in difficult conditions and it’s a good win which puts the boys top of the league.
“We had the wind going with us first half.
“The defenders try to drop it into strikers and it might be a good ball but the wind gets hold of it and it puts the ball through to the goalkeeper.
“That unsettled us a little bit.
“I thought we dealt with the conditions well, so it’s a great win.”
Maguire had played only three minutes of competitive football since October 23, so was pleased to get an hour under his belt before being substituted for Danny Hylton, whose goal won the game.
The former Sheffield Wednesday and Aberdeen front man said: “I’m happy with that. It’s my first game in a few weeks.
“It’s good to be back playing on a Saturday and getting some games.”
