BENJI Buchel believes it will take until this week for Oxford United’s promotion success to truly sink in.

The 26-year-old arrived as a free agent last September, but went on to become the club’s No 1 goalkeeper, starting 31 games.

As someone who had never played in the Football League before this season, Buchel was left pinching himself after it was confirmed the U’s had finished as runners-up in Sky Bet League Two.

He said: “I can’t describe it. We worked so hard every day this season.

“It went to the last game – there was so much pressure and we won, I just can’t describe it.

“It will probably take me a couple of days to realise how good we have been this season.”

Buchel did not have a save to make in the 3-0 win against Wycombe Wanderers, but he was alert to smother a chance for Stephen McGinn on the hour mark.

The Liechtenstein international said: “We worked so well defensively and we concentrated for the whole 90 minutes.”

“Sometimes the ball falls down in an area and you just have to be quick off your line.”
