SAM Slocombe has joined Sky Bet League Two side Blackpool following his release by Oxford United yesterday.

The goalkeeper agreed a settlement on the remaining 12 months of his contract at the Kassam Stadium and signed a one-year deal with the Tangerines.

Slocombe was told last month he and fellow stopper Max Crocombe were not in his plans by head coach Michael Appleton.

The 28-year-old arrived on a free transfer in June 2015 after an injury saw him fall down the pecking order at Scunthorpe United, with whom he won promotion from League Two in 2013/14.

He began last season as the U’s undisputed No 1, but lost out to Benji Buchel, who finished the campaign on top.

And the writing was on the wall for Slocombe when Simon Eastwood signed this summer.

Appleton said: “It’s a little bit unfortunate for Sam, but I think it’s always important to be honest with players and not waste their time.

“From my point of view I made it clear Benji did ever so well and Simon was coming in to compete with him for the No 1 jersey.”
