In the latest column written by United fans, CHRIS DAVIS goes all the way back to the 1950s

I’M not sure about the year of my first match – I’m told it was 1954, but later questioning of my father and brother led me to believe it may have been 1955.

Having checked the archives, the opponents for Headington United – the name change to Oxford United was still several years away –would have been either Tonbridge, Exeter City Reserves or Merthyr Tydfil.

I didn’t go to every home game until 1959, by which time supporting the U’s had become second nature and my Saturday fix was eagerlyawaited.

Four of my children have since succumbed to the delights of following the club and have become season ticket holders at different times.

I do remember the first time I attended a match on my own.

It was just days after my ninth birthday: Worcester City visited on the opening day of the 1960/61 season.

It was a two-mile walk from my home to the Manor and involved crossing the London Road.

Not many nine-year-olds would be allowed to do that nowadays.

I was rewarded by a 3-0 win.
