SOUTHEND United’s match-winner Anthony Wordsworth admitted he was fortunate to still be on the pitch to score the penalty which sunk Oxford United.

The midfielder, who was booked for diving in the first half, caught Chris Maguire on the hour mark.

He went on to convert the all-important spot-kick following Phil Edwards’s handball, but acknowledged it could have easily turned out differently.

Wordsworth, whose previous start was in March due to a hamstring injury, said: “It was unintentional but I caught their player with my arm and I was a little bit lucky to get away with it if I’m honest.

“I was fearing the worst but I got away it with it and it was a great moment when I scored the penalty.

“I was shocked to be starting because I hadn’t had much time in training or on the pitch but I’m really happy.

“And I actually felt like crying when I scored after being out for so long.”
