OXFORD United’s January transfer dealings were a glimpse of their recruitment plans for this summer, says owner Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth.

The U’s owner, known as Tiger, held meetings with head coach Karl Robinson and other key staff last week to draw up a plan for the close season.

There is still work to do before United can be sure of lining up in Sky Bet League One this August, but it is clear the end of this campaign will trigger big changes.

Robinson told a fans’ forum last week: “Once we accumulate enough points that we feel is about right and we can breathe, we will make decisions on the futures of players.

“I think there’s a massive overhaul to be done.

“I’ve had a chat with Tiger about the ambition and direction we want to go in.”

That appears to be focused on a return to the recruitment of young, raw players with development potential which had served Michael Appleton well before his departure last year.

United began to revert to the model in January, where undisclosed fees were spent on signing Rob Dickie and Cameron Brannagan from Reading and Liverpool respectively.

Although Thanakarnjanasuth’s takeover was not confirmed until February, he was involved in backing the deals.

And, speaking before the Easter games, the Thai businessman is expecting more of the same to follow.

He said: “I got involved a little bit in the January window.

“I’ve been connected to Rob Dickie and Cameron Brannagan, the two we brought in permanently.

“I think we didn’t make a mistake, they were good choices.

“You will see that kind of player coming in during the summer.”

He added: “In the rest of the matches of course we’ll do our best and stay in the league.

“For sure later on we’ll build a very strong team this summer.”

When questioned about the plans by supporters on Good Friday, Thanakarnjanasuth indicated a healthy budget would be confirmed with Robinson shortly.

He said: “When you talk about next season, I think it will be very exciting.

“The first time I met with Karl we had a long conversation about who we’re going to keep and which positions we need to add to for next season.

“When he came up with the names, I said ‘wow, this is Championship-level’, so it’s going to be very exciting.”
