Oxford United boss sends message to fans

DON’T write us off – that was the message from manager Chris Wilder after his team dropped two more points at home against Kettering on Saturday.

The U’s 1-1 draw at the Kassam Stadium means Stevenage now lead the Blue Square Premier by rights for the first time.

They are a point ahead of Oxford with the same number of games played.

But Wilder said anyone writing Oxford United off for the title, and automatic promotion, would do so at their peril.

“We’re still massively in this,” he insisted. “We’ll dust ourselves down and go again.

“I think everybody has said it, there are going to be more twists and turns.

“It wasn’t the result we wanted, against a good Kettering side who, in the second half, were pretty happy to go away with a point, which is understandable.

“We’ll get on with it, keep our own counsel, let other managers say their piece and just keep working hard.”

He added: “We’ve got to keep going, we’re not turning it in . . . there’s no white flag.

“Write us off at your peril, because there’s a lot of fight left. And other teams at the top now have got to handle the pressure that we’ve had to handle all season.”

In a dour game of few chances, United got their noses in front through Franny Green’s first league goal for the club, only to surrender their hard-won advantage by conceding another goal from a set piece.

But they also lacked confidence and quality at the top end of the pitch.

“I’m frustrated because we should have gone on to win the game,” Wilder said.

“The first 25 minutes we were on the front foot, we created chances, the reaction from Tuesday was really good, we competed and made contact with the game, and things happened for us.

“I was disappointed that we didn’t add to the one goal we had, and really disappointed with their goal.

“It gave them a massive lift. They’d not created anything first half and it came from a set piece so they didn’t really have to work for it.

“In the second half, you could see the situation we’re in. The players are trying to do the right things, it isn’t coming off for them at the moment.

“Players are just lacking a bit of confidence at the moment, but that really does change quickly.

“We’ve got to get over it and we’ve got to get over it pretty quick.”

Hugh - I'm not sure we are even a team for one half ?

Very worried looking at our next 4 fixtures....anything less than 7 pts would be a disaster

I agree with OslerRoad, next four are the vital ones however I think more than seven is a must. Cannot put my finger on just what has gone wrong, suppose it's a combination of chopping and changing plus injuries to key players. We all expected with our squad, that players would just fit in and carry on, clearly those on the fringe are not good enough. The pitch is an absolute joke, but I guess it's the same for both sides. Lack of confidence, lack of concentration when defending set pieces and a waste of so many set pieces of our own. We are not out of it yet, but if the results are not right in the next four games, we certainly will not be the team to beat in the play-offs.

You are not wrong Dave, but more than 7 pts means a win at either Rushden or Stevanage, which on current form is a big ask for us.

Even Rushden are scoring freely.

I remember our promotion runs in the 80's when we all went to games KNOWING we were going to win. The crowd sang "we're goin' to score in a minute" and we usually did. Of course it did not always work out but the confidence of the teams and the crowd was almost palpable.
That has not been the case here all season and we have often struggled even when we have won. I felt after the Tamworth game that things might not work out but the results and the way we played in the last two home games make me think that not only will we not get automatic promotion, we may not even make the play offs. If we do, we are not sure to win those.
This already made be the feeling at the Club and hence the Season ticket offer.

It has to be a worry. We are not scoring enough goals Simple as that, with some teams around us scoring & NOT letting them in, we seem to have trouble in both areas. I still say.

Guys, I know that it is really difficult to be positive and easy to be negative given recent results, but this is when the team and the club need us to be positive.

The hayes game was, admittedly, appalling and in my opinion the guys started the match with the wrong attitude , assuming it was going to be easy. (Either that or they had all been on a major drinking session the night before)

The Kettering result was not a disaster given their away record, and as we all know the saying "if you can't win, make sure you don't get beaten".
The football we are playing currently is not great, but to be frank it was only two weeks ago I was walking out the ground after the Wimbledon second half saying that if we play like that for the rest of the season we will go up.
I personally think that Wilder has done and continues to do a good job. He has continued to try and better the playing staff, and yes maybe too many changes has affected things, but we have lost the likes of Constable, Potter & Murray and he is simply trying to cover these big losses.

All teams be it Man Utd, Arsenal Chelsea, and down the leagues the Leeds and the Rochdales of the world have bad runs.
Also these sides don't play well every week, hammering sides. More often than not they grind out one nils or two one victories, when perhaps they deserved less. In other words I don't care if the Yellows don't play champagne football as long as they grind out results.

At this time of the season it is about the mental strength of the team and us the supporters. We have to keep backing them , willing them on and hopefully results will come.
I know that we all want promotion badly, but the facts remain we have to simply focus on our results. It is no good worrying about " if we lose at Stevenage" or "If we lose to Tamworth" we just have to deal with it when it happens. If it's the playoffs, then it's the play offs.
I know it's of concern but lets continue to back them, and hope that they start to play the way we all know they can ( which is why it is sooooooo frustrating when they play like they did against Hayes).

Keep on believing, back the manager and the lads, and here's to a few 1-0 victories from now until the end of the seaon.

PS I wish they would work on corners though . We have not looked good from corners since the Paul Moody Days............ the first time around......

OK. When Robert Maxwell took over the club in the early 1980's, he was quoted by the Oxford Mail as saying that he didn't want promotion for the first two years (I challenge ANYONE to look that up, under the 'archives' section) The next two seasons saw us miss out on promotion by the narrowest of margins!
In '83 we played Man. Utd in the league cup. Radio Oxford had a phone-in and I spoke to Ron Atkinson (man. U) and Jim Smith. Based on the report from the OM 2 years before, I accused Oxford United of purpously failing to get promoted. Think I'm mad? A few years later, Maxwell was exposed as a crook!
My point is this: 2006-7 saw us start off in a canter. Then all of a sudden, we were rubbish for no reason. Then, miraculously, we came good again when it was too late. Same next season and again last season. In my opinion, if Oxford United Fc Ltd. were really serious about going into the Football league, they would have sacked Mick Brown over the registration fiasco!
Everybody agrees that, if we needed to get more players, then we should have tried for more forwards, just recently.
Oxford United? Prove me wrong!

Even Man Utd and Chelsea have blips in their season. Yes but Man U in particular always seem to finish strongly and they don't go from getting 2 plus points up until Christmas to 1.25 per game, which is what Oxford are doing at the moment and did in 2006/7.
