United boss Wilder full of praise for City

Chris Wilder admitted his Oxford United players were beaten by the better side following last night’s 1-0 friendly defeat at neighbours Oxford City.

An own goal from Leigh Franks in a disappointing team display made it two friendly defeats in a row, following the midweek loss to Manchester United.

“It was a good, competitive game,” said Wilder, who refused to name the triallist who played for them in midfield against City.

“It was good for both sides, particularly for us in terms of players getting minutes under their belts.

“Every game we play is important to us.

“We are disappointed tonight. There have not been too many fantastic performances out there from us.

“But all credit to the opposition, they were better than us on the night.

“What I said in the dressing room is between me and the players, but it was constructive.

“There are some players that maybe need to up their game a bit more.”

He said the players still had a chance to force their way into his thoughts for this Saturday’s League Two opener away to Burton, in Monday’s final pre-season game at Banbury United.

“There’s always a chance they can do that. I have to choose the team from a squad of 20 good players.”

Meanwhile, Franks said the players were determined to put it right against Banbury.

“It’s difficult to know what to say about the game – we’re all disappointed.

“The own goal was just one of those things. I put in a good block and it went over the keeper’s head. There’s not a lot you can do about it.

“Now I’ve got to try to push myself to get in the squad for Burton.

City boss Mike Ford added: “I was very pleased with our performance, but we’ve still got two weeks of hard work before the season starts.”

He also had special words for goalkeeping coach Paul Davis who played in goal after No 1 Richard Knight got stuck in traffic.

“He did very well considering he wasn’t even registered to play. To be fair to him he didn’t really have too much to do.”

It proves the point, we do not have a natural striker apart from JC. There will be games when JC will not be able to play. What then? Jack Midson is not a natural goal scorer. He works hard but a higher level he will struggle. Surely this has been proven so far.

Totally agree Joe.
Ive said a few times that I don't think we will score many goals and got slated for it. Constable is the only player who will get more than 10 goals. If constable got injured we would be stuffed and I think we wouldnt be far off relegation fodder if that was to happen. Midson didnt look like scoring in the conference so he wont score in a league higher admittedly a league with not much more quality than the conference.
Midson can't even score against city who had there goalkeeping coach in goal. I'm not a big fan of paying players off but in this instance with Midson i think we should ive seen him many times and i know he works hard but i cant see what he does positive for the team other than that.

Hopefully Chris has someone in mind tho. We have 5 centre backs for whatever reason so lets hope he hasnt spent wages budget on them.

Before people slate me for being negative i do think on the whole that Chris has done a very good job over the summer with the signings. But maybe he has forgotten goals win you games not just clean sheets.

I would love more than anyone that im proved wrong tho!

I agree we need another striker but your anti Midson post surprises me. He cant score against City and doesnt look like scoring. Interesting comments for someone that scored 20 goals for Histon (and in both games against us) when played as a central striker.
You may have watched him many times but must be blind to not be able to see what he contributed to the team last season.
You want to pay off a player that was brought back into the team last April and helped transform us from a team going backwards to going on to play off victory. Laughable.

Theres goals in any player dependant on the service sadly Midson needs service where the ball is passed to him and hes only 2 yards away from the goal and no keeper and sadly that wont happen!

You say he transformed he took franny greens place i think didnt he. You could of put me in place of franny green and i think you would of seen an improvent. Someone whos average at best who replaces someone truly awful is always gonna look like an improvement!

The way you said it as well is like were dependant on Midson if so then were bu**ered and we mays well plan for the conference again.

Anyone else think it was a little silly for both teams to play in blue?

Reference the striker situation -
We need to blood another central striker before the start of the season as we'll struggle for goals of anything happens to Beano. It's good that we have strong attacking wide players as these are usually the hardest positions to find because goal scorers like to be central however by neglecting the central role or leaving it late to bring someone in could be the difference between a decent finish and a mediocre one come the end of the season. Also keep in mind that its in Beanos nature to get in trouble so he'll miss games through suspension as well as any potential injuries.

But alls told it is pre season and a chance to try new things and for everyone to get fit and bond as a squad so it would be naive, and I'm sure nobody is to read too much into the results

We were crying out for another goal scorer for the second part of last season, all we signed was Frannie Green and John Grant....one goal between them. Jack does work hard but he fails to take his chances, Matt Green, although he does convert several does miss quite a few openings.. If we are to be anywhere next season CW must sign someone who can convert chances, why did we trial yet another midfielder last night?.

is it me but i was a pre-season friendly, be clam, have faith in CW and the squad
Jack in a quality player, give him the right service with balls into the box and he will get goals
and we have Alfie and Mitchel to provide that
yes if beano was out for a length of time we would miss him ,but that is the idea of a squad
so lets have no doom and gloom
be postive, and get behind the lads

This game did indeed highlight a problem with our new kits - pretty inevitable baring in mind both our kits are blue!...Bring back the yellow already for goodness sake...

Midson. Remember his goal against League One Yeovil in the cup? A classy finish if ever there was one...

So what's the deal with "A Triallist"? Is this one a convicted paedophile or something....¿ Or is he so good Wilder's keeping his name quiet in case a higher league team comes after him or sommat.....scratchy head time....

There is an interesting post on the yellows forum regarding Midsons performance when played centrally (4 goals in 8 games) and the teams performance when he started (won 17, drew6, lost 2 out of 25) and when he didnt start (won 13, drew 8, lost 9 out of 30). I would suggest on those figures we would still be in the conference without him. He contributes so much more than a few goals, the team simply play better with him in it. We do need another striker to cover Midson, Beano and Green who are all unproven at league level. Greens one season at Torquay was hardly a success.

Comments made about the need for another striker as cover or as alternative type of strike option to Beano amplify what I said previously.

I think we will do okay in Div2, I am sure we will prove to be a difficult team to beat. How many goals do you reckon we will get over the season? That said the reason we did not go up as champions was that we did not score enough goals.

I am sure with Cole and Alffie and replacements in place of Murray we will cause opponent problems. But I would like to see another striker as cover with physical presence that can convert chances either in the air from set pieces or a "Luther Blisset" who won't get pushed pushed off the ball around the box.

there's only one Jack Midson
Jack will get goals given the right service
keep faith, and sit back and watch him soar up the goal charts
quality and a knack for scoring goals his a inborn sense Jack has it watch his movement and his touch inside the box
get behind back fours with our wingers and turn defenders and put in crosses and Jack and Beano will score stacks of goals in the league
we do not need to chop and change just get the best out of what we have
