Oxford Utd 2, York City 1 (08/08)

Mark Creighton fires home a dramatic injury time winner Mark Creighton fires home a dramatic injury time winner

Oxford United staged an astonishing late comeback to win their opening match of the season.

Looking to be heading to defeat, they snatched the game out of the fire with Matt Green equalising on 88 minutes, and Mark Creighton firing in the winner in the 91st minute.

York had led with a breakaway goal from Richard Brodie on 34 minutes, had been the better side for long spells as United gave a very disjointed display.

You've got to feel sorry (or maybe not) for any Oxford fans, who left three or four minutes from time. They missed a finale that had to be seen to be believed.

U's boss Chris Wilder chose Ryan Clarke ahead of Billy Turley in goal and within four minutes, Clarke had produced a super save.

Brodie headed the ball back from the far post and Andy Ferrell looked certain to score six yards out. But Clarke somehow got down to stop Ferell's shot on the turn for a superb save.

The U's just couldn't seem to get the ball down, while York's narrow midfield meant Dannie Bulman and Simon Clist were often quickly outnumbered when they got possession.

It wasn't until the 28th minute that the home side really threatened Michael Ingham's goal, and that was from a set piece.

Adam Chapman hit his set-up free-kick well enough, but couldn't get through York's massed defence.

But the ball was then chipped up for Mark Creighton to get a header on goal, though the big centre half couldn't get any power behind it.

It needed some good defending by Ben Purkiss to shepherd the ball back to his keeper when James Constable tried a run on goal, as United's centre forward continued to live off scraps.

A half-chance fell York's way at the other end when Levi Mackin hit a dropping ball wide on the volley from the edge of the area.

The Minstermen opened the scoring on 34 minutes and the U's felt aggrieved because there looked to have been a foul on Clist in the middle of the pitch before they broke forward.

Alex Lawless played the ball quickly through to Brodie, and despite Clarke's desperate attempts to stop him, the striker shot against the near post and, when the ball came back kindly towards him and with Luke Foster unable to get there, Brodie hammered the follow-up into the goal.

United continued to want too much time to do everything, and when they stood off Rankine, they almost paid the penalty, the former Hereford striker firing a left-footed drive narrowly over.

At half-time Wilder replaced Marcus Kelly, who hadn't really been able to influence procedings, with Alfie Potter, switching Adam Murray to the left.

Nine minutes into the second half, Matt Green came on for Kevin Sandwith, as the U's switched to 4-3-3 with Clist dropping into the left back position.

But York sat back and the U's were seldom able to penetrate.

Midson set up Constable for a 20-yard shot which he fired well wide, and from an excellent cross from the right touchline by Constable, Green tried a glancing header but couldn't get any weight on it.

Even the introduction of Alex Rhodes near the end, which gave Oxford a lot of attacking players, couldn't get them back on level terms.

But then, on 88 minutes, Luke Foster played the ball through and Green flicked it past keeper Ingham, with James Meredith trying to clear it off the line, but only after it had crossed.

United's fans were now urging their team forward, and in stoppage time, after some pinball in York's penalty area and one shot blocked, Mark Creighton lashed home the loose ball to send the crowd delirious.

Oxford Utd: Clarke; Chapman, Foster, Creighton, Sandwith (Green 54); Murray, Bulman, Clist 6, Kelly (Potter, h-t); Constable, Midson (Rhodes 74). Subs not used: Batt, Day.

Referee: Rob Whitton (Essex).

Att: 6,408 (420 from York).

A wins a win tho obviously we do want to see a better performance BUT listening to a lot of fans on the Radio Oxford phone in calling for changes already, more than one even talking of bringing haldane back shocks me, Yes the expectation is HUGE here and it will take time for them to bed in and hopefully they will get better tho York are a good team and come next May wont be far off play offs, they started better than we did and nearly stole the goods, we need to get our act together quickly as there are no easy games in this League, we have had 3 full seasons down here and know its tough BUT believe and support and hopefully it will get better!

Two comments--Great win our No 12 helped in both--Muzza never looked like a winger but played an excellent game--all the Yellows who played were worthy of man of the match but my selection is Ryan Clark we play much better with a 4-3-3 great entertaining afternoons footy thank goodness i lost me voice and able to type

Good to get the win. The importance of this result is more than just the 3 points accumulated; its about gaining the momentum to take into the next game and the creating self-belief that wins can generate. It was the first home game for a lot of players so the experience shouldn't be so 'new' next time.

The result of the more impressive due to the character shown. It will be another season of breaking down teams in our home matches so patience is the key.

The 0-3 Barrow result now a distant memory....

Sides who fail to perform well, but still scrape a win is a sign of a side that usually does well.

This game was a battle and York made it tough for us, but it lasts until the referee blows his final whistle.

Although the performance was not up to what we have come to expect, it does show the never-say-die and battling qualities of our side - something we have lacked for so many years.

This time last year we were humiliated in the first game of the season and we're now already three points ahead of what we got out of our first two matches back then.

Room for improvement, but we still got the points when the chips were down.

Bring on Kettering.

Two very late goals. Three lovely points. Four thousand at Wimbledon. Five goals against Sw.. Sw..(sorry, I hate mentioning that name) Six thousand fantastic OUFC fans.

it’s the first game of the season you t*t, at least give the team time to gel and find their feet in the league. You can't do that in pre-season friendly’s, only league games count and have a competitive factor.
I'm not taking anything away from York who played very well but I believe we have a team that will be there for the whole season and not one game.

1st Game of the season there were nerves to start with from Oxford, then it was really a matter who would score first I felt if Oxford had of got a Goal we might well of gone on to score 2 or 3 however we kept throwing high balls which there keeper took everytime maybe some were trying too hard ? after there goal they were in total command Oxford did look poor with some Fans around me leaving or getting up to leave Matt Green turned a half chance into a goal mind you I seem them not given was it over the line ? after that panic set in to York there keeper made his first mistake and they didn't look so good after all, Yes we got out of Jail Yes we will play better and Lose but Yes we will get better 6000 fans creates alot of pressure and expectation is high, to be able to bring Green on shows we have some depth to the squad, Lets enjoy the win Lets hope for better and Lets get behind the lads dont know about you but I cant wait for the next game, please if your reading this come to the next home game, this season might just be what we have been waiting for, The Heart is beating still at OUFC

I think it unlikely that we will play that badly again,CW wont allow it.It was the worst winning performance I`ve seen from us.We wont get away with it next time.It is obvious that the players will take time to gel and CW must figure out his best 11.While this process happens we must stay in contention.I thought we looked imbalanced with too many playing out of position.Chapman is no full-back and neither is Clist.Murray must play in the centre with one of Clist or Bullman(they are too similar to play together). We must start with 2 wingers, this will give us much more balance(we do have 4 to choose from!).Beano must remember he is no longer a lone striker.I am confident that a strong, pacey team will develop soon.KEEP THE FAITH.

A simple long ball evaded all our defenders putting their man in the clear, how can the keeper be blamed for that ? You hope your keeper can prevail in that situation, but you shouldn`t expect him to.If one of our strikers had a chance like that we would all expect a goal, not a save.I`m glad Clarke has this chance,he made a fine early save and kicked well.He is about 10 years younger than Turley and will hopefully keep well for us for years to come.

It,s only one game. Sure they wre poor, but they kept going. Getting out of this league is the priority and to do so requires a certain amount of luck. Previous seasons the luck has gone against the U,s. Fingers crossed Lady Luck has brought a season ticket.

Anyone with a dicky ticker should look away now, a great ending to a pretty hard game, to win ugly is ok, winning is all that matters, one game one win, time to put the hard work in for the next 9 months and get out of this poxy league.
