'People power' has been credited after an announcement that plans for a waste plant in Pinkham Way would be scrapped.

The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) announced today it would withdraw its application to build a controversial waste treatment plant in Pinkham Way.

Lib Dem councillor Juliet Solomon was part of the Pinkham Way Alliance campaign against the plans, She said: “This is wonderful news and really shows what people power can do.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to the sterling work of our supporters and the Pinkham Way Alliance, and the tireless opposition which they have shown to this cause.”

The campaign argued the facility would affect air quality around the site and would it lead to increased traffic on the North Circular Road.

MP for Wood Green and Hornsey Lynne Featherstone said: “This site was thoroughly unsuitable from the very beginning, and the way in which Haringey Labour nodded the plans through and ultimately wasted taxpayers’ money was utterly disgraceful.

“The cancellation of the Pinkham Way development will be the best possible Christmas present for thousands of residents in Bounds Green, Alexandra and across Haringey.”

Labour councillor Joanna Christophides said: “I’m delighted that at last sense has prevailed and the waste authority is withdrawing its planning application.

“It’s a real victory for all those local residents who have campaigned hard against these ridiculous proposals and have expressed real concerns about the damage a large waste plant would do to our local area.”
