RAPIDLY fluctuating river levels put paid to Abingdon RC’s Spring Head Race on Sunday, disappointing over 360 entries, many from local clubs, writes John Wiggins.

The club’s event committee said: “We really are heartbroken.”

Following the announcements for the Great Britain European Championships team, others will get a chance to race at the Varese World Cup Regatta this weekend in Italy.

Wallingford RC’s Ellie Piggot races in the lightweight double, while Oxford Brookes’ Matthew Tarrant will be in one of the two men’s pairs; the other contains former Abingdon schoolboy, Ollie Cooke.

At this week’s GB trials for U23, Student and non-Olympic World Championships teams, another Abingdonian, Matt Rossiter staked a solid claim by winning in the pairs, while Brookes’ Michael Glover and Morgan Bolding were the second placed U23 crew.

After coming seventh in the pairs at the Olympic trials, Headington’s Fiona Gammond pressed her claim for consideration with a victory.

In lightweight sculling, there was a win for Wallingford’s Mary Wilson.
