CITY of Oxford were celebrating after one of their crews qualified for next week’s Henley Royal Regatta, writes John Wiggins.

Qualification is achieved through a time trial over the full 2,860 yards of the course with limited spaces for each event.

City’s men’s eight excelled by making it through to compete in the Thames Cup.

Oxford Brookes are a selected (seeded) crew in the Temple Challenge Cup.

Their B crew had already pre-qualified and they have since been joined by their C boat, who have qualified for the fourth successive year.

Their women’s eight qualified in the Remenham Challenge Cup, while selection is conferred on their men’s fours in both the Prince Albert and Visitors events, and a part-share with Leander in the Queen Mother quad sculls.

Oxford Universit’ women’s eight qualified for the Remenham event, while Oxford Blue Josh Bugajski finds himself a qualifier in the prestigious Diamond Challenge Sculls.

Wallingford RC’s lightweight women are represented in two crews in the Princess Grace event for quad sculls, with one crew qualifying to join the already selected boat containing Ellie Piggot, Brianna Stubbs and Gemma Hall.

Abingdon School had to qualify their eight in the Princess Elizabeth schools event, with their top rowers having been entered in the Fawley event for quad sculls.

l Abingdon School featured with four wins at Reading Town Regatta where, despite the occasional heavy downpour, the organisers coped with a record entry.

Radley College collected three wins –including a dominant one in the J15 eights – while St Edward’s School won the J15 fours.

Wallingford’s junior squad had three victories.

Their girls J14 quad (Zoe Ray, Catriona Harrison, Leah Gordon, Alice Thorby and cox, Aoife McGurk) won comfortably.

The J16 crew of James Willcox and Louis Wardle won a tight battle in novice doubles by half a length.

Georgia Swiatoniowska and Lucy Bird won an even tighter race over two Oxford University lightweight crews in the IM2 doubles.

Abingdon RC also took away three wins apiece as did the Oxford University lightweight women.

Oriel College had a win in the IM3 coxed four.

City of Oxford’s women achieving success at the Ironbridge Regatta in novice four and IM3 eight as well as for Inayat Khan in the Masters D single.

Abingdon took the women’s masters double.

Falcon RC juniors picked up more wins in the Egham Regatta.

Martin Benfeghoul was successful in the J16 single, while the J15 girls, Cicely Lobreglio, May Carter, Emily Tadesse and Molly Chambers, coxed by Becky Hore, won in their quad.

The one multi-lane, non-river event was at Peterborough where Headington School scooped silver medals in both the J13 and J14 quads.

The B double also won silver while in the A doubles,Falcon took gold and bronze.
