THE 2016 competitive club programme drew to a close with wins for Wolfson College at Walton Small Boats Head, writes John Wiggins.

Racing over 3,000 metres, the ‘Wolves of Wolfson’ were victorious in four novice sculling events.

This year’s Oxford Blue Ëlo Luik and Phil Schäfer won in the singles, Stefanie Zekoll and Laura Depner in the women’s double, with Schäfer and Depner combining to take the mixed doubles title.

It was a good day for Oxford college rowers, with wins in singles for Peter Forsyth (St Catherine’s) in masters A novice and Wadham’s Stephanie Hall in the women’s IM2 event.

City of Oxford’s Naomi Sharma won the masters C single and was second with Mary Murray in the double.

Falcon took the masters D double title with the crew of Mary Heather Crowther and Charlotte King, and second place in the women’s masters B double through Georgia Dowdeswell and Jo Humphries.

l City of Oxford youngster Charles Shepherd shone in the British Indoor Championships at the Olympic velodrome.

Shepherd won the year seven event, achieving a massive 555 metres and a winning margin of 38m in the allotted two minutes.

Moulsford Prep School, Wallingford, celebrated with a silver medal for Cameron Wood in the year eight event.

l With the Boat Race trial eights races completed, the various Oxford University squads will now move into training camps.

This is ahead of final selection for the Cancer Research Boat Races on April 2 and the Henley races for lightweights on March 26.

The achievements of Oxford University rowers at the Rio Olympics were celebrated at the club’s trial eights dinner at Magdalen College.

Head coach Sean Bowden paid tribute to the 2016 medallists all of whom were present – gold medal winners Andrew Triggs Hodge, Peter Reed, Paul Bennett and Constantine Louloudis and silver winners oe de Toledo and Zoe Lee from the women’s eight.

Michael DiSanto, the Dark Blues’ president for 2017, was fourth in the USA eight just behind new Oxford squad member, Olivier Seigelaar, a bronze medallist for Holland.

l Ahead of this weekend’s International Volunteer Day, it was fitting City of Oxford recognised one of their unsung heroes, Steve Hodbod, by naming one of their three new boats after him. He is key to the running of their annual regatta.
